Overview
ISO 4077:2023 - "Coal - Guidance for sampling in coal preparation plants" provides recommended practices for sampling coal products, reject materials and magnetite in coal preparation plants (CPPs). The standard covers particle sizes from a nominal top size of 63 mm down to 0.1 mm, and also addresses larger sizes when mechanical sampling is used. Manual sampling is not recommended for particle sizes larger than 63 mm.
This guidance helps ensure samples are representative, accurate and precise for decision-making across quality control, process evaluation and inventory management.
Key topics and requirements
- Sampling objectives and principles
- Defines why sampling is performed (process control, feed characterisation, performance evaluation, auditing, inventory reconciliation).
- Emphasises that every particle and associated phase (water/medium) should have an equal chance of inclusion.
- Sampling methods and stream types
- Distinguishes between solid/board (screen discharge) sampling and slurry sampling.
- Describes mechanical sampling (full-stream samplers, diverter-type samplers), point and pressure-pipe samplers, and manual sampling methods.
- Covers automatic slurry samplers and two-in-one slurry samplers (primary and secondary sampling).
- Design, planning and management
- Guidance on designing sampling systems for new plants and retrofitting existing plants.
- Advice on sampling location selection (including slurry flow regimes and screen discharge), pre-sampling inspections, personnel, containers and sample mass considerations.
- Recommends maintaining a sample point register with implement types, sample volumes and photographic records.
- Handling, reporting and safety
- Procedures for post-collection handling, secondary sampling, laboratory submission and sampling reports.
- Explicit safety warning: users must implement site-specific health and safety measures and risk assessments.
- Supporting materials
- Informative annexes include recommended manual sampling locations, checklists, recommended laboratory analyses and example sampling plans.
Applications and users
ISO 4077:2023 is practical for:
- Plant operators and process engineers implementing or auditing coal sampling programs in CPPs.
- Mineral processing technicians responsible for slurry and magnetite sampling.
- Quality assurance teams, laboratory managers and consultants preparing sampling plans and SOPs.
- Procurement/specification teams selecting mechanical or automatic full-stream and slurry samplers.
Use cases include feed quality characterisation, online quality monitoring and control, equipment performance evaluation and regulatory or contractual quality verification.
