Overview - ISO 4148:2004 (Road vehicles - Special warning lamps - Dimensions)
ISO 4148:2004 defines the dimensional and mounting requirements for special warning lamps used on road vehicles to ensure interchangeability, accurate positioning and consistent beam behaviour. The standard covers five device categories (tube-mounted, flat-base, single-stem, magnetic-base and warning signal units) and includes normative test methods (Annex A) for magnetic-base mountings used directly on steel vehicle panels.

- Interchangeability & mounting accuracy: lamps must meet the dimensional figures in the standard; when properly mounted the attitude shall be within 1° of the specified position. Mounting checks require five re-mounts on an appropriate fixture.

- Magnetic-base mounting tests (Annex A) - scope and key procedures:
- Test sample: ST14 steel sheet, 0.70 mm, painted to 120 µm ±20 µm, gloss per ISO 2813.
- Lifting force (Fa): measured perpendicular until separation; tested at 23 °C and repeated at −30 °C and 80 °C.
- Horizontal force (Fb): applied parallel to panel curvature; record movement or separation and application height.
- Shock resistance: minimum 16 g for 30 ms; allowed movement ≤ 200 mm.
- Corrosion resistance: neutral salt spray (NSS) 5 % NaCl for 168 h (ISO 9227); post-test Fa/Fb shall not differ by more than 10 %.
- UV/ozone resistance: materials to meet ISO 4892 requirements or be certified.
- Additional requirements: secondary retention system to prevent loss, user/manufacturer instructions for safe mounting and use, and marking of magnetic devices with manufacturer and load data.
