Overview
ISO 4198:1984 - Surface active agents - Detergents for hand dishwashing - Guide for comparative testing of performance - is an international guideline for designing and reporting comparative tests of products intended for domestic hand dishwashing. It defines the principal performance characteristics to be assessed, the types of soiled articles and soils to be used, the washing processes and variables to control, and how results should be reported and interpreted. The standard applies to liquid and solid detergents for manual dishwashing (not machine dishwashers) and complements sampling and vocabulary standards referenced in the document.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Performance characteristics to evaluate across successive washing stages:
- soil and grease removal, dispersion of soil in the wash solution, redeposition on dishes
- sudsing behaviour (initial suds, stability, ease of removal during rinse)
- final appearance (absence of streaks, spots or smears)
- speed of drainage and amount of product required to achieve the target performance
- Soiled articles and soils:
- use naturally soiled items where possible (household or canteen sources); if artificial soils are used, application and ageing must be controlled
- include a representative variety of substrates (porcelain, glass, metals, plastics) and soil types (fats, proteins, carbohydrates, tannins, baked-on residues)
- control amount, preparation, and storage of soiled articles for reproducibility
- Washing process variables to specify and control:
- washbasin/washbowl type and washing aid (sponge, brush, cloth) or mechanized device
- water hardness and Ca/Mg ratio, temperature, and volume
- product dosage, method and order of introduction, mixing, sequence of washing, and operator energy input
- Testing and reporting:
- select variables to reflect local consumer habits and document them clearly
- use replicate tests for statistical reliability and report methods, conditions, and interpretation
Applications and users
ISO 4198 is practical for:
- detergent manufacturers - product development, benchmarking, and quality control
- independent test laboratories - standardized comparative testing and reporting
- R&D teams - formulation optimization for cleaning and sudsing balance
- marketing and regulatory units - substantiating performance claims under controlled conditions
- standards bodies and consumer organizations - harmonized test design reflecting consumer practices

By following ISO 4198, organizations can design reproducible, consumer-relevant comparative testing for hand dishwashing detergents and produce transparent, interpretable performance data.
