This document specifies a method for the assessment of the resistance to cold liquids of all rigid furniture surfaces, regardless of materials. It does not apply to leather and textile surfaces. The test is intended to be carried out on a part of the finished furniture, but can be carried out on test panels of the same material, finished in an identical manner to the finished product, and of a size sufficient to meet the requirements of the test. Annex A includes a selection of suitable test liquids. Annex B provides an example for a testing matrix.

ISO 4211-1:2025 - Furniture - Tests for surface finishes - Part 1: Assessment of resistance to cold liquids specifies a standardized method to evaluate how rigid furniture surfaces resist exposure to cold liquids. Test principle: Saturated filter-paper discs soaked in a test liquid are placed on the test surface and covered with a glass Petri dish for a specified period. After removal and a 16–24 h rest, the area is cleaned and examined for changes (discolouration, gloss change, blistering, swelling, surface loss).

Conditioning: Test surfaces must be conditioned one week prior to testing at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity.

Test periods: Standard timeframes reflect realistic spill-removal intervals: 10 s, 2 min, 10 min, 1 h, 6 h, 16 h, 24 h, 7 days, and 28 days (long-term).

Assessment: A descriptive numerical rating code (5 to 1) is used:

5 = No change
4 = Minor change (distinguishable under mirrored light)
3 = Moderate change (visible in several directions)
2 = Significant change (visible in all directions, slight structural change)
1 = Strong change (structural damage or material removal)

Reporting: Test reports must reference ISO 4211-1:2025 and include panel description, liquids used, conditioning time, test periods, assessment ratings, deviations, test facility and date.
