Constitutes a guide for carrying out comparative tests of fabric washing products in such a way as to realistically reflect the performance of the products likely to be used by consumers. It gives details of the variables to be considered, indicated the significance and importance of each of these variables, and privides a basis fornthe drawing up of adequate comperative test methods which will give a valid estimation of the performance of a fabric washing out product when two or more products are compared during the same series of tests.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4319:1977 - Surface active agents - Detergents for washing fabrics - Guide for comparative testing of performance is an ISO guide for designing and conducting comparative tests that realistically reflect how fabric washing products perform for consumers. First published in 1977, the document focuses on domestic laundry detergents used in household washing machines and explains the variables, significance and interactions that must be considered when comparing products.
Key Topics
- Purpose and scope
- A guide to comparative testing of detergents for washing fabrics under realistic consumer conditions.
- Applies to domestic washing products; industrial or specialist laundry products are excluded.
- Test planning principles
- No single laboratory test can fully define real-world performance; tests must consider national washing habits, soils and textile variety.
- Sampling and sample division should follow ISO 607.
- Performance characteristics to assess
- Fabric appearance: soil removal, redeposition, brightening, stain removal and overall whiteness.
- Fabric feel
- Fabric stability: chemical/physical damage, colour and finish, dimensional stability and tensile strength.
- Effect on washing/drying equipment: deposition and interactions with machine parts.
- Fabric loads and test pieces
- Prefer naturally soiled domestic fabrics for most performance aspects.
- Use family bundles or multi wash-and-wear cycles for cumulative effects.
- Standard soiled or artificially stained and unsoiled test pieces can be used for targeted ingredient or bleaching evaluations.
- Washing process and appraisal
- Define washing cycles, load size, mechanical action and water temperature to match intended consumer use.
- Single-wash assessments are limited; multi wash-and-wear procedures (generally at least ten cycles) are recommended to reveal cumulative differences.
- Some damage assessments may require 25–50 washes to appear reliably.
- Reporting
- Results and interpretation guidance are provided to ensure valid comparative conclusions.
Applications
ISO 4319 is useful for:
- Detergent manufacturers developing or benchmarking household detergent and surfactant formulations.
- Textile and laundry test laboratories performing comparative performance testing.
- Consumer organizations validating product claims on cleaning, whitening and fabric care.
- Quality assurance and R&D teams assessing cumulative effects on textiles and washing machines.
