This document specifies a method of determining the particle size distribution of metallic powders by dry sieving into size fractions. The method is applicable to dry, unlubricated metallic powders, but not applicable to powders in which the morphology differs markedly from being equiaxial, for example flake-type powders. The method is not applicable to metallic powders having a particle size wholly or mostly under 45 µm.

Overview
ISO 4497:2020 - Metallic powders - Determination of particle size by dry sieving - specifies a standardized method to determine the particle size distribution of dry, unlubricated metallic powders by dry sieving into size fractions. The method applies to powders with essentially equiaxial morphology and is not applicable to flake-type powders or powders that are wholly or mostly under 45 µm.

- Principle: Separate powder into fractions by shaking through a stack of calibrated wire cloth test sieves and weigh each retained fraction and the pan fraction.
- Test sieves: Use calibrated non-magnetic wire cloth sieves mounted in non-magnetic frames (nominal diameter 200 mm; depth 25–50 mm). Aperture sizes should follow ISO 565 principal or intermediate sizes and be chosen to resolve the distribution adequately.
- Test portion: Typical masses are approximately 100 g for powders with apparent density > 1.50 g/cm3 and 50 g for densities ≤ 1.50 g/cm3. Minimum test portion is 10 g for smaller-diameter sieves (mass should be adapted to sieve area).
