Overview
ISO 4891:2024 - Ships and marine technology - Interoperability of smart applications for ships - defines operational and performance requirements for onboard smart applications. The standard addresses documentation, process management, connection and data collection via human‑machine interfaces (HMI), maritime IoT technologies and related systems. It specifies methods for implementing open smart network applications and describes a smart logbook that supplements ISO 21745 and is subject to the same security requirements (see Annex B).
ISO 4891:2024 establishes three incremental equipment classes:
- 4891‑compliant (Clauses 5–7)
- 4891.A‑compliant (Clauses 5–7 + Annex A)
- 4891.B‑compliant (Clauses 5–7 + Annexes A and B)
