This document specifies a method for the determination of chromium in steel and iron by potentiometric or visual titration. The method is applicable to chromium contents between 0,25 % (mass fraction) and 35 % (mass fraction). If vanadium is present, the visual titration is applicable only to test portions containing less than 3 mg of vanadium. NOTE The visual titration can be applicable to test portion containing between 3 mg and 6 mg of vanadium.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4937:2024 - "Steel and iron - Determination of chromium content - Potentiometric or visual titration method" specifies an analytical procedure for measuring chromium in steel and iron. The method covers chromium mass fractions from 0.25% to 35% and describes two endpoint detection options: potentiometric titration (with electrodes) and visual titration (using potassium permanganate as indicator). The standard updates the previous edition by introducing an optional electrode, re-assessing precision data and confirming limits for vanadium interference in visual titration.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Chromium determination in steels and irons for 0.25–35% Cr by mass fraction.
- Analytical principle: Dissolution of the test portion, oxidation of chromium to Cr(VI) (using ammonium peroxydisulfate in presence of silver sulfate), reduction of Mn(VII) by HCl, and back-titration of Cr(VI) with a standard ammonium iron(II) sulfate solution.
- Endpoint detection:
- Potentiometric: equivalence point found by potential change using platinum‑saturated calomel or platinum Ag/AgCl electrodes.
- Visual: excess Fe(II) titrated with potassium permanganate (permanganate acts as indicator). Visual titration has vanadium limitations - applicable only when the test portion contains less than 3 mg V (note: 3–6 mg may be applicable with caution).
- Test portion masses: Guidance on sample mass based on expected Cr content (e.g., ~2 g for 0.25–2% Cr down to ~0.25 g for 25–35% Cr).
- Reagents and apparatus: Specifies reagent grades, preparation/standardization of potassium permanganate and ammonium iron(II) sulfate solutions, and class A volumetric glassware.
- Safety and procedural notes: Contains warnings about perchloric acid vapours and the need for appropriate fume cupboards.
- Quality data: Includes precision/reproducibility assessment from interlaboratory testing and instructions for blank determination and result expression.
Applications and users
ISO 4937:2024 is intended for:
- Quality control and chemical analysis laboratories in the steel and foundry industries
- Metallurgical R&D and process control teams verifying alloy composition
- Certification bodies and inspection labs performing material compliance testing
- Failure analysis and forensic metallurgy when accurate chromium content is required
Practical uses include composition verification of stainless steels and high‑alloy steels, incoming material inspection, and routine production QA where accurate chromium measurement (including high Cr alloys) is needed.
