ISO 500-3:2014 specifies the manufacturing requirements for, and the location of, rear-mounted power take-offs (PTOs) of types 1, 2, 3, and 4 on agricultural tractors.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 500-3:2014 specifies manufacturing requirements and the permitted location for rear‑mounted power take‑offs (PTOs) of types 1, 2, 3 and 4 on agricultural tractors. The standard defines main PTO dimensions, spline profiles (external and internal), mating‑shaft geometry and positional limits so that PTOs and implements are mechanically compatible across manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- PTO location: The PTO axis must lie within the shaded rectangle in the standard’s Figure 1 and be parallel to the tractor longitudinal axis (and to the ground within ±3°). Vertical height “h” is specified per PTO type (examples: Type 1 h = 480–800 mm, Type 2 h = 530–900 mm, Types 3 & 4 h = 600–1 000 mm).
- Main PTO dimensions: Detailed shaft and groove dimensions, chamfer sizes and angles (e.g., chamfer angle 30° ± 3°) and minimum effective/hardened spline lengths are given for each PTO type (Type 1 ≥ 76 mm, Type 2 ≥ 64 mm, Type 3 ≥ 89 mm, Type 4 ≥ 100 mm).
- Spline geometry: Type‑specific spline specifications are included:
- Type 1: straight‑sided spline (6 teeth).
- Types 2, 3 and 4: involute splines with defined module, number of teeth and pin/over‑pin dimensions (e.g., Type 2: Z=21, M=1.587; Type 3: Z=20, M=2.116; Type 4: Z=22, M=2.50).
- Material/hardness requirement: The hardened portion of splines shall have a minimum surface hardness of 48 HRC when tested per ISO 6508.
- Inspection and tolerancing: Allowed form, lead and index variations, concentricity limits and GO/NO‑GO composite gage priority are defined for manufacturing control.
Applications and who uses it
- Tractor OEMs: ensure consistent PTO placement and shaft design across models for implement compatibility.
- Implement and driveline manufacturers: design mating shafts, yokes and couplings to match standard spline dimensions and tolerances.
- Component suppliers and machining shops: use dimensional and hardness specifications for production and quality control.
- Test labs and certification bodies: verify compliance using the specified inspection criteria and hardness tests.
- Aftermarket and retrofit providers: design adapters and replacement PTO shafts that interchange safely with standard tractor PTOs.
Related standards and references
- Normative reference: ISO 6508 (Rockwell hardness test) for spline hardness verification.
- For general spline inspection guidance, see ISO 4156 (metric involute splines).
- Use keywords: ISO 500-3:2014, rear-mounted PTO, power take-off, agricultural tractors, PTO dimensions, PTO splines, spline hardness, PTO location.
This standard ensures mechanical interchangeability, reliable power transmission and predictable fitment between tractors and rear-mounted agricultural implements.
