ISO 5001:2012 applies to cold-reduced carbon steel sheet of commercial and drawing qualities for vitreous enamelling, where the surface of the sheet and chemical composition of the base metal are of prime importance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5001:2012 specifies requirements for cold-reduced carbon steel sheet for vitreous enamelling. It covers commercial and drawing qualities where surface condition and chemical composition of the base metal are critical for successful enamelling. Typical product forms are coils and cut lengths in thicknesses from 0.35 mm (commonly up to 3 mm) and widths of 600 mm and wider.
Keywords: ISO 5001:2012, cold-reduced carbon steel sheet, vitreous enamelling, enamelled steel, VE01–VE05
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and product definition
- Applies to cold-reduced steel sheet with a matte finish prepared for fabrication and vitreous enamelling.
- Quality designations
- VE01 - commercial quality
- VE02, VE03, VE04, VE05 - drawing and deep-drawing qualities (including aluminium-killed and interstitial-free variants)
- Types for enamelling
- Type 1 (two-coat), Type 2 (very-low-carbon, one-coat/direct cover coat), Type 3 (interstitial-free, excellent formability)
- Chemical composition
- Maximum carbon limits by type: Type 1 = 0.05%, Type 2 = 0.02%, Type 3 = 0.008%.
- Limits and reporting required for Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti (heat and product analyses specified).
- Heat analysis for each melt is required; product analysis may be performed by purchaser.
- Mechanical properties and testing
- Tensile test requirements, sampling, retests and acceptance procedures follow Clauses 7–10 and reference ISO 6892-1 for tensile testing.
- Typical tensile strength and elongation minima are defined for VE grades (see standard for Table 4 values).
- Surface finish and processing
- Skin-pass is used to control surface finish, minimize stretcher strains (Lüders’ lines) and control shape.
- Surface condition, finish, oiling, and coil/shape tolerances are specified to ensure enamel adhesion and appearance.
- Strain ageing and handling
- Guidance on strain ageing (carbon/nitrogen diffusion) and recommendation to minimize storage time and rotate stock; VE04/VE05 preferred to reduce ageing.
Applications and users
- Primary users:
- Steel producers and mills manufacturing cold-reduced sheet for enamelling
- Enamelling houses, appliance and cookware manufacturers (baths, ovens, refrigerators, ovens, sanitaryware)
- Purchasing/specification engineers, quality assurance and metallurgists specifying enamel-grade steel
- Practical uses:
- Specifying material for durable enamel coatings where surface chemistry, formability and firing behavior matter
- Ensuring compatibility between steel grade, enamelling process (one- or two-coat) and final part fabrication
