Defines basic terms used in the winding of yarns, onto formers or other suitable devices, by means of winding machines. This does not exclude the use of the terms in question for other textile processes, for example, spinning or twisting. Also applicable to yarn-like textile materials such as filaments and man-made tapes.

ISO 5239:1980 - "Textile machinery and accessories - Winding - Basic terms" is an international vocabulary standard developed by ISO/TC 72. It defines the basic terminology used for the winding of yarns onto formers or other suitable devices by winding machines. The standard also explicitly applies to yarn‑like materials such as filaments and man‑made tapes, and its terms are intended for use across related textile processes (for example, spinning and twisting). The official text is in English, French and Russian, with informative German and Italian equivalents provided in annexes.
