ISO 5275: 2003 specifies a procedure (Doctor test) for the detection of thiols (mercaptans), hydrogen sulfide and elemental sulfur in hydrocarbon solvents and distillate petroleum feedstocks and products.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5275:2003 specifies the qualitative "Doctor test" procedure for the detection of thiols (mercaptans), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and elemental sulfur in hydrocarbon solvents and distillate petroleum feedstocks and products. The standard defines a go/no‑go (qualitative) method based on shaking a test portion with sodium plumbite (Doctor) solution and observing colour changes or precipitate formation. It also describes preliminary checks for peroxides and phenolic contaminants that can invalidate or interfere with the test.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Detection of active sulfur species (thiols/mercaptans, H2S, elemental sulfur) in petroleum products and hydrocarbon solvents; not a quantitative assay - threshold values depend on the material under test.
- Principle: Mix a sample portion with sodium plumbite solution and observe the aqueous/non‑aqueous interface for black or brown precipitates, opalescence or darkening. Confirmation of thiols is done by adding sublimed sulfur and re‑observing.
- Preliminary tests:
- Phenolic substances: test with NaOH - significant coloration invalidates the Doctor test.
- Peroxides: KI + acetic acid + starch - blue colour invalidates the test.
- Interferences: Carbon disulfide at relatively high concentrations (above 0.4 % (m/m) sulfur) can darken the aqueous layer and confuse results.
- Reagents & apparatus: Analytical‑grade reagents; preparation of sodium plumbite from lead acetate and NaOH; cadmium chloride wash to remove hydrogen sulfide when needed; glass mixing cylinders, separating funnels.
- Safety & disposal: The standard warns about hazardous materials and specific toxic reagents (e.g., cadmium chloride) and requires appropriate safety and environmental disposal measures.
- Reporting: Results are reported using standard outcome phrases (e.g., “Doctor positive - hydrogen sulfide present”, “Doctor negative”, or “Test invalid - peroxides present”) and must include sample ID, reference to ISO 5275, any deviations, and date of test.
Applications and users
- Routine screening in refinery quality control, solvent manufacturing and incoming raw material inspection to rapidly detect active sulfur species that can cause corrosion, catalyst poisoning or odour issues.
- Environmental and laboratory technicians performing quick go/no‑go checks before committing samples to more complex quantitative sulfur analyses.
- Users: petroleum laboratories, QC chemists, analytical technicians, environmental testing labs and procurement/receiving personnel in fuel and solvent supply chains.
