This document defines the rules and processes used to assign and manage identifiers to items of interest within the ITS community.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5345:2022 - Intelligent transport systems - Identifiers defines the rules and processes for assigning and managing identifiers for items of interest within the ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) community. It specifies how items are recorded in the Registry of Intelligent Transport System Items (RITSI), the attributes that describe registers and items, and the procedures for requesting, approving and maintaining identifier assignments. The standard is intended to ensure globally unique, concise and unambiguous references across ITS specifications and implementations.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Global identifiers for ITS-specific item classes that are simple, non‑privacy sensitive and require global uniqueness. Exclusions include ITS-S unit identifiers, complex data concepts, local identifiers, multi‑part identifiers and broader ICT identifiers (e.g., TCP ports managed elsewhere).
- Registry model (RITSI): A registry is a collection of registers; each register maps identifiers to items and associated attributes. RITSI is designed to be open, searchable and usable across ISO and non‑ISO documents.
- Attributes for registers: Each register is defined by attributes such as Name, Description, Datatype (expressed in ASN.1 per ISO/IEC 8824-1), Special attributes, Policy reference and Documents that normatively use the item class.
- Attributes for items: General attributes include ID, Name, Description, Assignee, Updated (date-time), State (reserved, allocated, assigned, revised, legacy, noLongerInUse), and Decision (URL to decision document). Special attributes (defined per item class) indicate required/optional fields for registration.
- Request and governance process: Defines authorized requesters, responsibilities of requesters and assignees, required contents and timing of requests, multiple-assignment requests and an appeals process. Annex A supplies a normative item registration request form.
- Maintenance: Registers are maintained by a designated maintenance agency (MA); the MA and contact info are listed on ISO’s maintenance agencies page.
Applications
- ITS application developers and equipment providers use ISO 5345:2022 to reference protocols, applications, organizations and other ITS items unambiguously across systems and documents.
- Standards authors and systems integrators rely on RITSI identifiers as value domains in data elements and to ensure interoperability.
- Maintenance agencies, registrars and national bodies use the defined processes to manage assignments, updates and legacy state transitions.
