Overview
ISO 5415:2007 specifies dimensions and basic requirements for reduction sleeves with a 7/24 external taper and a Morse internal taper that include an incorporated screw. The standard covers 7/24 taper sizes No. 30, 40, 45, 50 and 60 and Morse internal taper sizes No. 1 to 6 (Morse No. 4–6 may be with or without positive drive). These reduction sleeves permit driving tools with Morse taper shanks that have tapped holes by using an internal screw; the exact form and fixation of that screw are left to the manufacturer.

Key topics and requirements
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensions are provided (see Table 1 in the standard) and are expressed in millimetres. Unspecified tolerances default to tolerance class “m” per ISO 2768-1.
- Two shank types: Type A and Type B 7/24 external shank geometries are defined; relevant dimensional drawings are included.
- Morse taper options: Internal Morse tapers No. 1–6 are covered; Morse tapers 4–6 can be supplied with positive drive or without.
- Material and mechanical properties: Material choice is left to manufacturers, but a minimum tensile strength and a hardness requirement (56 + 4 HRC) are specified.
- Screw design: The incorporated internal screw enables driving of tapped Morse-shank tools - its exact shape and fixing method are not standardized.
- Designation: A clear designation format is given (e.g., Reduction sleeve ISO 5415 – A 40 x 4) to identify sleeve type, 7/24 taper number and Morse taper number.
Applications and users
- Practical use: adapt larger 7/24 taper tool holders to accept smaller Morse-tapered tooling, enabling positive driving of tools with tapped Morse shanks via an internal screw.
- Typical users:
- Tool and adapter manufacturers
- Machine-tool designers and OEMs
- Toolroom and workshop engineers
- Purchasing and quality assurance teams specifying compliant reduction sleeves
- Common sectors: general machining, toolmaking, maintenance and repair of machine tools where standardized taper adapters are required.
