ISO 5488:2015 specifies requirements and the method of test for accommodation ladders used on merchant ships (excluding passenger ships) to enable crew and pilots to embark and disembark safely. ISO 5488:2015 is applicable to the design, manufacturing and testing of accommodation ladders as well as accommodation ladder used specifically in combination with pilot ladder (hereinafter referred as "pilot accommodation ladder").

Pilot accommodation ladders: safe operation up to 45° (per IMO A.1045(27)).

Steps: uniform load 735 N per step; individual steps must withstand a central point load of 735 N.
Pilot ladders: additional requirement of 1 470 N on two intermediate steps simultaneously.
Access/intermediate platforms: 4 000 N/m² uniform loading.
Handrails: side loading 500 N/m without permanent deformation.
Safety factor: 2× yield point for steel and 2× 0.2% proof stress for aluminium.

Recommended materials: structural steel (e.g., Fe360B) or aluminium alloys (e.g., AW‑Al Mg5, AW‑Al MgSi).
Steel: anti‑corrosion treatment; aluminium: anodic oxidation; measures to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Manufacture, testing and inspection:

Prototype testing, inspection and marking requirements are specified (including strength of pivots, suspension points and anti‑twist ladder frames).
