Overview
ISO 6316:2012 - Hot-rolled steel strip of structural quality specifies requirements for hot-rolled steel strip intended for structural applications where defined mechanical properties are required. The standard covers typical hot-rolled strip rolled on narrow strip mills and supplied in the delivered condition for bolted, riveted or welded structures. It excludes commercial/drawing quality (see ISO 6317), steels for boilers/pressure vessels, rerolling to cold-reduced products, and weathering steels.
Keywords: ISO 6316, hot-rolled steel strip, structural quality, steel strip standards, mechanical properties.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material scope
- Grades normally without microalloying: HR235, HR275, HR355.
- Thickness range: 0.65 mm to 12 mm inclusive; widths up to 600 mm (exclusive).
- Chemical composition
- Heat-analysis limits for C, Mn, Si, P, S are specified per grade (e.g., HR235 C ≤ 0.17 %; HR275 C ≤ 0.20 %; HR355 C ≤ 0.20 %).
- Limits on additional elements (Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti) and rules for sums of certain elements.
- Mechanical properties
- Minimum yield and tensile strength values given by grade (examples: HR235 Rmin ≈ 235 MPa / Rm min ≈ 330 MPa; HR355 Rmin ≈ 355 MPa / Rm min ≈ 450 MPa).
- Elongation requirements and test-piece gauge length rules are defined.
- Manufacture and condition
- Steelmaking processes are at manufacturer’s discretion unless otherwise agreed.
- Surface condition, descaled vs. as-rolled, and optional oiling are addressed.
- Testing and inspection
- Tensile testing per ISO 6892-1; Charpy V‑notch impact testing per ISO 148-1 when specified (typically for >6 mm).
- Sampling, product/heat analysis, dimensional tolerances and acceptance criteria are defined.
- Practical provisions
- Coil size, marking, purchaser information and workmanship requirements are included.
Applications
ISO 6316 is intended for structural hot-rolled strip used in:
- Fabricated steelwork (bolted, riveted or welded parts)
- Components produced from narrow-strip coil (brackets, channels, light structural members)
- General construction and manufacturing where consistent mechanical performance, weldability and dimensional tolerances are required
Keywords: structural steel strip, welded structures, narrow strip mill, coil supply.
Who should use this standard
- Steel producers and mills manufacturing hot-rolled strip
- Procurement and quality managers specifying structural strip for fabrication
- Design and fabrication engineers selecting materials for welded/bolted structures
- Inspection and testing laboratories performing compliance verification
