ISO 6360-4:2004 specifies the code numbers for specific characteristics of rotary diamond instruments and diamond-coated discs for use in dentistry. This three-digit number forms the fourth group of three digits in the 15-digit overall number, the principles of which are explained in ISO 6360-1 and ISO 6360-2. ISO 6360-4:2004 also gives a three-digit number which in addition to the 15-digit code number may be used to provide additional information for diamond instruments and diamond-coated discs, at the discretion of the manufacturer. NOTE In addition to terms for rotary instruments and accessories used in two of the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), ISO 6360-4:2004 gives the equivalent terms in the German language; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6360-4:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a number coding system for rotary diamond instruments and diamond-coated discs used in dentistry. This part of the ISO 6360 series focuses on detailing the specific characteristics of diamond instruments, providing a structured 15-digit code for easy identification and classification. The code aids manufacturers, dental professionals, and the dental trade in standardizing descriptions of these rotary instruments, facilitating clear communication and product specification across the industry.
Key Topics
- Number Coding System: ISO 6360-4:2004 defines a three-digit code representing specific characteristics of rotary diamond instruments and diamond-coated discs. This code forms the fourth group of three digits within a comprehensive 15-digit identifier.
- Length and Thickness: The standard specifies how to encode the length of the working part of diamond instruments in increments of 0.1 mm, and the thickness of diamond-coated discs in increments of 0.01 mm.
- Nominal Diameter: Locations 13 to 15 in the code specify the nominal diameter of the instrument’s working part or the external diameter of diamond-coated discs, adhering to ISO 2157.
- Optional Coding: An optional three-digit segment (positions 16 to 18) can provide additional manufacturer-specific information about the angle of tapered diamond instruments or the width of diamond coatings on discs.
- Structured Format: ISO 6360-4 complements other parts of the ISO 6360 series, such as ISO 6360-1 for general characteristics and ISO 6360-2 for shapes, ensuring a unified and systematic approach to rotary instrument coding.
Applications
- Dental Instrument Manufacturing: Enables manufacturers to encode product details such as working length, thickness, diameter, and optional characteristics into a universally recognized numbering system.
- Product Cataloging: Dental suppliers and manufacturers can use the ISO 6360-4 coding to create standardized, clear product catalogs that facilitate easy identification by purchasers and practitioners.
- Quality Control and Traceability: The standard coding system helps in quality assurance, inventory management, and traceability of diamond rotary instruments throughout the supply chain.
- Regulatory Compliance: Using ISO 6360-4 supports compliance with international regulations by adopting standardized terminology and coding methodology.
- Custom Instrumentation: Manufacturers can assign optional codes for unique instrument features, assisting dental professionals in selecting the perfect instrument for specialized treatments.

ISO 6360-4:2004 provides a crucial framework for the dental industry by enabling precise classification and coding of rotary diamond instruments. This fosters consistency, enhances communication, and supports product innovation in dentistry through standardized instrument identification. Adopting this standard benefits manufacturers, clinicians, and regulators worldwide by simplifying the complex variety of diamond rotary instruments used in dental practice.
