This document specifies the mechanical properties of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy rods/bars, tubes and wires for general engineering applications (except aeronautical rivets). It is applicable to products which are extruded and then cold drawn. It does not apply to: — products which are rolled and then cold drawn, including seam-welded tubes; — forging stock, wire for drawing stock; — drawn wires for aeronautical application, electrical or welding purposes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6363-2:2022 - "Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys - Cold-drawn rods/bars, tubes and wires - Part 2: Mechanical properties" defines the mechanical property requirements for extruded aluminium and aluminium-alloy products that are subsequently cold drawn for general engineering use (excluding aeronautical rivets). The third edition (2022) updates alloy and temper references and corrects previous editorial errors. It applies specifically to extruded then cold-drawn rods/bars, tubes and wires and excludes rolled-then-drawn products, forging stock, drawing-stock wire, and wires for aeronautical, electrical or welding applications.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Focused on extruded → cold-drawn wrought aluminium and aluminium-alloy products for general engineering (explicit exclusions noted).
- Mechanical property tables: Contains Tables 1 and 2 that set limits for tensile strength, 0.2% proof stress (Rp0.2) and elongation for a wide range of alloys and tempers (examples in the standard include 1050, 2014, 2024, 6061, 7075, etc.).
- Tempers and alloys: Temper designations follow ISO 2107; alloys referenced follow ISO 6362-7. Annex B lists the tempers used in the tables.
- Tensile testing: Test specimen selection and method are required to follow ISO 6892-1 or ASTM B557M.
- Elongation measurement options: Two gauge-length conventions are permitted (producer may choose one unless otherwise agreed), with details and rounding rules provided in Annex A.
- Additional rules: Notes on when certain temper properties (e.g., T42, T62) apply, and conditions for materials after controlled cooling or purchaser-applied heat treatment.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 6363-2:2022
- Manufacturers of extruded and cold-drawn aluminium rods, bars, tubes and wires - to define and guarantee mechanical property limits for production and quality control.
- Purchasers and specifiers in engineering, construction, automotive, marine and general manufacturing - to select suitable alloys and tempers and to include consistent requirements in contracts.
- Testing and inspection laboratories - to perform tensile testing in accordance with the referenced methods and to verify compliance with the tabulated limits.
- Design engineers - to reference standardized tensile and proof stress values when specifying components made from cold-drawn aluminium.
- Quality assurance and compliance teams - to ensure delivery, inspection and documentation meet ISO 6363-1 (inspection/delivery terms) and ISO 6363-2 mechanical requirements.
