This International Standard specifies the reference method for the determination of polyethylene-type polymers in animal and vegetable fats and oils. It has been established that below 50 mg of polymers per kilogram the precision of the method is insufficient (see the results for tallow 1 in Table A.1). This method is used for animal fats and oils in particular.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6656:2002 specifies the internationally recognized reference method for the determination of polyethylene-type polymers in animal and vegetable fats and oils. Polyethylene-type polymers, primarily originating from packaging materials, can interfere with the processing, quality, and usability of fats and oils. The standard sets out procedures to detect and quantify these impurities, supporting both quality control and regulatory compliance across the food and related industries.
Key Topics
- Scope of Measurement: The standard applies to the analysis of animal and vegetable fats and oils, with particular relevance to animal fats. It identifies and quantifies polyethylene-type polymers, impurities that are soluble in boiling tetrachloroethylene.
- Analytical Precision: The method described is accurate for concentrations above 50 mg of polymers per kilogram. Below this threshold, method precision is not sufficient.
- Method Principle: The analysis involves acid treatment, solvent extraction, filtration, and gravimetric measurement to determine the presence and quantity of polyethylene-type polymers.
- Safety Considerations: The method requires the use of toxic, ozone-depleting solvents like chloroform and tetrachloroethylene. Appropriate laboratory safety practices, including the use of fume cupboards and personal protective equipment, are essential.
- Sampling Importance: Accurate results depend on representative sampling, as polymer distribution in bulk fats and oils is often heterogeneous.
Applications
The ISO 6656:2002 standard is essential for a wide range of applications:
- Food Industry Quality Assurance: Ensures that animal fats and vegetable oils meet purity and quality standards by detecting the presence of packaging-derived polymers that can cause defects, such as deposits or undesirable marbling, particularly in soap manufacturing.
- Regulatory Compliance: Facilitates compliance with international and national food safety regulations concerning the permissible levels of contaminants in edible fats and oils.
- Process Optimization: By identifying polyethylene-type polymer contamination, manufacturers can refine their processing, packaging, and storage methods to minimize quality risks.
- Research and Development: Used in research settings to assess the migration of polymers from packaging and to support innovation in packaging material selection and process improvement.
- Environmental and Safety Auditing: Companies can use the standard to demonstrate their commitment to safety and environmental stewardship by monitoring and controlling solvent and polymer residues.
Related Standards
ISO 6656:2002 is part of a broader framework of international standards governing fats, oils, and analytical precision:
- ISO 5555 - Animal and vegetable fats and oils - Sampling: Provides guidelines for obtaining representative samples necessary for analysis as outlined in ISO 6656:2002.
- ISO 5725 - Accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results: Outlines methods for determining the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of measurement methods, referenced for assessing the analytical results obtained via ISO 6656:2002.
- Other Related Standards: Additional standards within the ISO/TC 34/SC 11 subcommittee provide further analytical methods for different impurities in fats and oils.
Conclusion
Adhering to ISO 6656:2002 helps manufacturers and laboratories ensure the quality, safety, and regulatory compliance of animal and vegetable fats and oils by providing a standardized method for quantifying polyethylene-type polymers. Consistent application of this standard supports product integrity and consumer safety while harmonizing testing across international markets. For organizations involved in the production, processing, or analysis of fats and oils, implementing ISO 6656:2002 is a vital step in robust quality management.
