This document is applicable to lighting devices used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210[1] and ISO 8098[2]. This document specifies the functions, safety requirements, photometric performance and test methods of lighting and signalling devices that can be used on cycles.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6742-1:2023 - Cycles - Lighting and retro-reflective devices - Part 1: Lighting and light signalling devices - is the international standard that specifies the functions, safety requirements, photometric performance and test methods for lighting and signalling devices used on cycles (particularly bicycles) intended for use on public roads. The fourth edition updates terminology (e.g., “continuous light”, “light emitting surface”), adds a daytime running lamp category, and expands test methods (including activation/deactivation timing and a new Annex C on current sources).
Keywords: ISO 6742-1:2023, cycle lighting standard, bicycle lights, photometric requirements, test methods
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Lamp types and functions: front position lamp, headlamp (low and high beam), rear lamp, stop lamp, direction indicators, stand light, daytime running lamp.
- Photometrical requirements: defined luminous intensity and distribution grids for each lamp type (examples shown in Tables and Figures for front position and rear lamps). Illuminance/luminance meters must be calibrated per ISO/CIE 19476 or equivalent.
- Modes of illumination:
- Continuous light (frequency above 50 Hz).
- Flashing modes where allowed (e.g., front position lamp may flash at 1–4 Hz; note some jurisdictions prohibit flashing).
- Definition of short pulse (
