Specifies a conventional gravimetric method for the determination. A test portion ist reated with quinoline in a beaker at 70 to 80 °C for 15 to 20 min. Then the dissolved test portion and the residue are brought to a Hartley funnel fitted with a filter pad, and are filtered. The washed and dried residue on the filter pad is weighed.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6791:1981 specifies a conventional gravimetric method to determine the content of quinoline‑insoluble material in pitch for electrodes used in aluminium production. The standard describes sample preparation, extraction with quinoline, filtration through a Hartley funnel fitted with a glass‑fiber filter pad, washing, drying and weighing of the insoluble residue to calculate the percentage insolubles. It is intended for quality control and specification testing of carbonaceous electrode pitches.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope: Determination of quinoline‑insoluble material in carbonaceous pitches for aluminium electrodes.
- Sample prep
- Dry sample at 105–110 °C for 1 h, cool in a desiccator and weigh.
- If hard, grind to particles
