ISO 6983-1:2009 specifies requirements and makes recommendations for a data format for positioning, line motion and contouring control systems used in the numerical control of machines. ISO 6983-1:2009 helps the co-ordination of system design in order to minimize the variety of program manuscripts required, to promote uniformity of programming techniques, and to foster interchangeability of input programs between numerically controlled machines of the same classification by type, process, function, size and accuracy. It is intended that simple numerically controlled machines be programmed using a simple format, which is systematically extensible for more complex machines. ISO 6983-1:2009 is not intended for use in the specialized cases of numerically controlled flame cutting machines and drafting machines used specifically and exclusively in the shipbuilding industry. In this application, a related format (“the ESSI Format”) is specified in ISO 6582.

ISO 6983-1:2009 - part of the ISO 6983 series - specifies a standardized data format for positioning, line motion and contouring control systems used in the numerical control (NC) of machines. Commonly referred to as G-code programming or ISO programming, this standard defines the word-address program structure (variable block format), address words, program blocks and general rules to promote uniformity, reduce program variants and foster interchangeability of NC programs among machines of similar type and function.

- Decimal and zero-omission rules: Supports implicit and explicit decimal formats; zero omission (leading or trailing) is defined in the detailed format classification (Annex C). Mixing explicit and implicit decimal formats in the same program is not permitted.
- Units selection: Preparatory G-codes select metric or inch input (G71 = metric, G70 = inch).
- Control functions: Definitions for preparatory (G) functions, miscellaneous (M) functions (grouped in Annex E), spindle speed, feed, tool functions and optional block skip (“/”) and alignment/rewind (“:”) controls.
- Interpolation and motion control: Programming methods for linear, circular, parabolic (and helical) interpolation, plus thread cutting and dwell timing (see Clauses 7, 11, 13).
- Tool offset and compensation: Rules for tool length, radius/diameter offsets and cutter compensation on contouring controls.
- Format classification and interchangeability: General and detailed format classifications (Annexes B and C) plus notes on program interchangeability (Annex D). The standard helps but does not by itself guarantee full interchangeability between different machines.
