Abstract
Overview
ISO 7129:1997 specifies the principal shapes and basic dimensions for cutting edges used on earth-moving machinery - specifically tractor-dozers, graders and scrapers. The standard defines cross‑section profiles, hole locations, and the shapes and dimensions of mounting bolt holes to ensure interchangeability of cutting edges across machines and suppliers. Annex A covers additional dimensions for regions using 140 mm and 280 mm bolt pitch.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Cross‑section shapes and dimensions: Principal profiles and dimensional tables for cutting edge widths and thicknesses (typical widths range from roughly 150 mm up to about 480 mm in the standard’s tables).
- Mounting bolt hole locations: Layouts for different width ranges and machine types (tractor‑dozers/scrapers vs. graders) with specified centre portions, pitches and distances from ends.
- Mounting bolt hole shapes and sizes: Countersink/counterbore and square hole details, with tabulated diameters and reference bolt sizes (bolt reference sizes in the standard run from about 1/2" to 1 1/4").
- Tolerances and positional controls:
- Countersink positional tolerance: within a 3.2 mm diameter.
- Square hole concentricity: inscribed circle concentric with countersink to within 0.8 mm.
- Camber tolerances: 2 mm/m (0.08 in/39.4 in) in main text; Annex A permits up to 6 mm/m where applicable.
- Special notes: Some inch values are non‑equivalent to metric values (widely used inch values were adopted where customary).
Applications
ISO 7129 is practical for:
- Designing and manufacturing cutting edges for bulldozers, graders and scrapers.
- Producing replacement parts and aftermarket wear parts that must be interchangeable across brands.
- Maintenance, inspection and procurement teams specifying correct part forms, bolt patterns and tolerances.
- Stock control and spare parts standardization to reduce inventory complexity.
Practical benefits include improved compatibility between OEM and aftermarket parts, clearer procurement specifications, and reduced machine downtime due to faster parts replacement.
Who should use this standard
- OEM designers and product engineers for earth‑moving machinery
- Forging, casting and machining shops manufacturing cutting edges
- Maintenance engineers, fleet managers and parts procurement specialists
- Standards bodies and conformity assessors working with construction equipment
