Abstract
Overview
ISO 7176-31:2023 - "Wheelchairs - Part 31: Lithium-ion battery systems and chargers for powered wheelchairs - Requirements and test methods" specifies safety, performance and test requirements for lithium‑ion cells, battery systems (packs/modules) and charging systems intended for electrically powered wheelchairs. The standard addresses battery performance, fire risk mitigation, battery management system (BMS) functions, charger interfaces and functional requirements, user instructions, labelling and test reporting. It emphasizes thermal runaway, regeneration charging (during deceleration or slopes) and the role of the wheelchair controller as part of the charging/battery system.
