Overview
ISO 7439:2023 - Copper-bearing contraceptive intrauterine devices - Requirements and tests specifies design, testing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling and clinical-evaluation requirements for single‑use, copper‑bearing intrauterine devices (IUDs) and their insertion instruments. It does not apply to IUDs made only of plastics or whose primary purpose is to release progestogens or other medicinal products, although some clauses can be relevant to medicated IUDs and non-copper designs.
This fourth edition (2023) updates clinical-performance guidance, adds requirements for packaging integrity, introduces a movable collar option for insertion instruments, and aligns instructions for health‑care providers with global family‑planning guidance.
