This document specifies the dimensions and performance requirements for dental explorers. This document is not applicable to endodontic explorers.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7492:2019 - "Dentistry - Dental explorer" defines dimensional and performance requirements for handheld dental explorers (excluding endodontic explorers). The standard specifies accepted shapes, measurement points, material expectations, hardness, mechanical connections, surface finish, resistance to reprocessing, test methods, and labelling requirements to ensure safety, durability, and consistent manufacturing quality.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Applies to dental explorers used for tactile examination of tooth surfaces; not applicable to endodontic explorers.
- Shapes & dimensions: Accepts a range of explorer forms (arc, double‑angled/standard, elbowed, double‑elbowed, curved, hooked, 3D, right‑angle). Measurement symbols include b, h1, h2, r, α, β with tolerances (typical linear ±0.5 mm, angular ±10°). Maximum recommended overall length: 173 mm (sterilization cassette compatibility).
- Materials: Working end must be metallic in accordance with ISO 7153‑1; handle material is manufacturer’s choice but must meet connection, finish and reprocessing requirements.
- Hardness: Working tip hardness requirements:
- Martensitic stainless steel: 500–650 HV1
- Austenitic stainless steel: >500 HV1
- Cobalt‑based alloys: >500 HV1 (Test per ISO 6507‑1 or ISO 6508‑1.)
- Connection strength: The joint between working end and handle shall not loosen; minimum performance: 600 N tensile and 0.45 Nm torque.
- Surface finish & cleanliness: Instruments must be visibly free from defects and residues; handle finishes should permit easy cleaning.
- Resistance to reprocessing: Must withstand 100 reprocessing cycles (cleaning, disinfection, sterilization per manufacturer’s instructions and ISO 17664) without deformation or corrosion. Hollow instruments must show no fluid ingress.
- Testing & inspection: Visual inspection, dimensional measurement (devices accurate to 1/10 tolerance), hardness testing, tensile and torque tests, and reprocessing trials are defined.
- Marking & labelling: Package and instrument labelling include manufacturer, model, lot number and UDI where required. Instruments with handles
