This document specifies an infrared absorption method after combustion in an induction furnace for the determination of the carbon content in ferronickels in the range of 0,004 % to 2,5 %. The method is applicable to normal production operations. It uses commercially available equipment, which is calibrated using steel and/or ferronickel certified reference materials (CRMs).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7524:2020 specifies an infrared absorption method after induction furnace combustion for determining the carbon content in ferronickels. The method covers carbon mass fractions from 0,004 % to 2,5 % and is designed for normal production operations using commercially available carbon analysers. Calibration is performed with steel and/or ferronickel certified reference materials (CRMs) to ensure traceability and accuracy.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Combustion of a test portion in a high‑frequency induction furnace in a stream of high‑purity oxygen; carbon converted to CO/CO2 and measured by infrared absorption.
- Measurement range: 0,004 % to 2,5 % carbon in ferronickels.
- Equipment: High‑frequency induction furnace, infrared carbon analyser, pressure regulator, appropriate crucibles and glass‑wool filters. Manufacturer instructions and stabilization procedures must be followed.
- Reagents and consumables: High‑purity oxygen (≥99,5 %), inert ceramic (attapulgus clay) impregnated with NaOH for CO2 absorption, magnesium perchlorate for moisture removal, fluxes (e.g., tin, copper) and accelerators (e.g., copper, iron), and certified reference materials (CRMs).
- Calibration and blanking: Use CRMs across each operating range (bottom, quartiles, top). Blank from oxygen, refractories, flux and accelerator shall not exceed 0,001 % carbon. For low carbon (≤0,1 %) blank correction procedures are defined.
- Sample preparation: Typical laboratory samples (powder, millings, drillings) require minimal prep; remove oil/grease with high‑purity acetone if contaminated. Pre‑ignite crucibles for determinations
