ISO 7731:2003 specifies the physical principles of design, ergonomic requirements and the corresponding test methods for danger signals for public and work areas in the signal reception area and gives guidelines for the design of the signals. It may also be applied to other appropriate situations. ISO 7731:2003 does not apply to verbal danger warnings (e.g. shouts, loudspeaker announcements). ISO 9921 covers verbal danger signals. Special regulations such as those for a public disaster and public transport are not affected by this International Standard.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7731:2003 - "Ergonomics - Danger signals for public and work areas - Auditory danger signals" specifies ergonomic design principles, performance requirements and test methods for non-verbal auditory danger signals used in public and work areas. The standard covers signal audibility, distinctiveness and unambiguity in the signal reception area, gives guidance for design (spectral and temporal characteristics), and sets objective and subjective test methods. It does not apply to verbal warnings (see ISO 9921) or special public-transport/disaster regulations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Audibility: the A-weighted sound-pressure level of the danger signal shall be at least 65 dB(A) at any position in the signal reception area.
- Signal-to-noise criteria:
- A-weighted difference (signal minus ambient): > 15 dB.
- Octave-band: signal must exceed the effective masked threshold by ≥ 10 dB in one or more octave bands.
- 1/3-octave-band: exceed the effective masked threshold by ≥ 13 dB in one or more 1/3-octave bands.
- Maximum level: signal level should not exceed 118 dB(A) in the reception area. If ambient noise exceeds 100 dB(A), use additional visual signals (e.g., ISO 11428 / ISO 11429).
- Recognition requirements: signals must be distinctive, unambiguous, and recognizable when sources are moving or when hearing protection is used.
- Test methods and equipment:
- Design considerations: spectral content, temporal patterns, duration, and supplier information requirements are specified to ensure reliable recognition.
Practical applications and users
ISO 7731:2003 is used by:
- Safety and facility managers specifying alarms in factories, construction sites and public venues
- Alarm and signal manufacturers designing non‑verbal auditory warning devices
- Acoustical engineers and ergonomists performing signal performance testing and validation
- Regulatory bodies and consultants developing workplace safety standards and emergency plans
Use cases include emergency alarms, machine warnings and area-specific hazard signals where clear non-verbal auditory alerts must penetrate ambient noise.
