Specifies a laboratory mechanical method of test for the determination of the relationship between tangential loading and relative displacement for certain types of vertical joints between large reinforced concrete panels subjected to tangential loading. Is applicable to vertical joints between large wall-panels satisfying certain conditions defined in the standard.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7844:1985 specifies a laboratory mechanical test method to determine the relationship between tangential (shear) loading and relative displacement for certain types of grooved vertical joints with connecting bars and concrete infill between large reinforced concrete panels. The standard addresses test specimen construction, apparatus requirements, test procedures (static and cyclic), measurement of displacements and cracking, and the required test report content. It is intended for vertical wall-panel joints that meet the geometric and reinforcement conditions defined in the standard.
Key topics and requirements
- Test objective: Establish the force–displacement (tangential load vs relative displacement) behavior of grooved vertical joints between reinforced concrete panels.
- Specimen composition: Two panel edges (rims) joined by a cast-in-place infill and connecting reinforcement; specimen thickness equals that of the real joint. Typical assembly length is about 2 000 mm.
- Apparatus essentials: Must provide rigid fixation of panel rims, permit sliding along the joint axis, apply load in the joint direction, and prevent overturning or unwanted rotations. Devices can test specimens in horizontal or vertical orientations.
- Pre-test preparation: A controlled debonding (pre-cracking) between the infill and one rim is required, producing a uniform contact crack opening of about 0.2 mm before the main test.
- Test modes:
- Static unidirectional loading with incremental increases until limit state (preferably reached in ~10 steps).
- Cyclic (alternating) tangential loading to produce stable force–displacement loops or a defined number of cycles, followed by a static test if required.
- Measurements and observations: Continuous or frequent recording of relative displacements (mid-length and ends), widening at joint ends, crack locations and development, and maximum shear resistance (expressed in newtons). Tests stop on significant degradation or when relative displacement reaches 20 mm.
- Reporting: Detailed description of specimen geometry, reinforcement, fabrication and concreting method, test fixture, loading program, measured deformations, crack development and peak shear resistance per unit length.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Structural engineers, precast concrete manufacturers, testing laboratories, research organizations and qualification authorities involved in the design, assessment and approval of large-panel wall systems.
- Practical uses:
- Characterizing joint shear stiffness, strength and ductility for structural analysis of large-panel buildings.
- Validating joint detailing, connecting-bar layouts and casting procedures.
- Supporting product qualification, performance comparison and research into seismic or wind-induced joint behavior.
Related standards (if applicable)
ISO 7844:1985 complements other national and international standards on concrete testing, reinforced concrete design and precast panel connections. Use it alongside relevant concrete material test methods and structural design codes when assessing joint performance.
