ISO 7885:2010 gives dimensional and performance requirements for sterile injection needles for single use which are used in dental cartridge syringes complying with ISO 9997 for injection of dental local anaesthetics. It further specifies requirements with respect to their packaging, labelling and colour coding. It does not cover needles for special applications or techniques. Only the materials used for the construction of the needle tubing are specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7885:2010 - "Dentistry - Sterile injection needles for single use" specifies dimensional and performance requirements for sterile dental injection needles designed for use with dental cartridge syringes (ISO 9997). The standard covers needle tubing materials, needle and hub assembly strength, packaging, labelling and colour coding for metric-size needles used to deliver local anaesthetics. It does not cover needles for special techniques, and only the tubing material (per ISO 9626) is prescribed.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 7885:2010 defines clear, testable requirements that manufacturers and users must meet:
- Needle tubing material: compliant with ISO 9626 (stainless steel needle tubing).
- Nominal outside diameters: 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm.
- Size designation: expressed as outside diameter × effective length (mm), e.g. 0.4 mm × 34 mm.
- Effective needle length tolerance: within ±10% of manufacturer’s stated length.
- Butt end geometry:
- Butt-end angle: 15° to 55° (measured through needle axis).
- Butt-end length: 9.0 mm to 14.0 mm.
- Needle tip quality: pointed and free from burrs/defects at 2.5× magnification; primary bevel angle within 2° of manufacturer claim.
- Hub performance:
- Union between hub and needle withstands minimum 22 N axial force.
- Socket depth ≥ 5 mm.
- Threaded hubs conform to metric M6 × 0.75; an imperial thread reference is provided in Annex A.
- Colour coding (per ISO 6009) for easy identification:
- 0.20 mm - black
- 0.25 mm - white
- 0.30 mm - yellow
- 0.40 mm - medium grey
- 0.50 mm - orange
- Packaging (primary container): hardpack or softpack that maintains sterility, shows evidence of opening, and allows attaching needle without touching it.
- Sterility: needles must undergo a validated sterilization process.
- Labelling: primary or secondary container must include manufacturer name/address, needle size, thread type, “Sterile injection needle for single-use”, single-use symbol, seal warning, expiry (ISO 8601), sterilization method, lot number, and quantity.
Applications and users
ISO 7885:2010 is applied by:
- Manufacturers of dental injection needles and hubs to design and validate products.
- Medical device engineers and quality teams for product specifications and compliance.
- Regulatory and procurement specialists assessing conformity and safety.
- Dental clinics and suppliers to ensure purchased needles meet safety, identification and labelling standards.
- Sterilization services and testing laboratories validating sterilization and mechanical performance.
