This document establishes a vocabulary for ignition systems of reciprocating internal combustion engines. In this document, the terms are classified as follows: a) types of ignition system; b) conventional ignition systems; c) electronic ignition systems; d) computer-controlled ignition systems; e) parameters for ignition systems. NOTE ISO 2710-1 gives a classification of reciprocating internal combustion engines and defines basic terms and definitions of such engines and their characteristics.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7967-10:2022 is an international standard that specifies a comprehensive vocabulary for ignition systems used in reciprocating internal combustion engines. Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 70, this standard provides unified terminology covering various ignition system types, including conventional, electronic, and computer-controlled ignition systems, as well as essential parameters involved in ignition system operation.
Ignition systems are critical for igniting the fuel-air mixture in engine cylinders, ensuring efficient combustion, performance, and emissions control. ISO 7967-10:2022 standardizes terms to facilitate clear communication, technical documentation, and interoperability across the automotive and engineering sectors worldwide.
Key Topics
-
Types of Ignition Systems Defines key categories such as battery coil ignition, magneto ignition, dual ignition, multi-point ignition, and pre-chamber ignition systems used predominantly for gas engines.
-
Conventional Ignition Systems Describes components including the ignition coil, distributor, contact breaker, spark plug, ignition switch, and timing advancers such as centrifugal and vacuum controls.
-
Electronic Ignition Systems Covers modern ignition technologies like transistor ignitor systems (TCI), condenser discharge ignition (CDI), Hall effect ignition sensors, and photoelectric ignition systems, which enhance ignition timing control and spark quality.
-
Computer-Controlled Ignition Systems Details digital ignition methods controlled by engine control units (ECU), incorporating sensors such as crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, and advanced coil designs like coil-on-plug configurations.
-
Ignition System Parameters Defines important technical terms such as dwell angle, ignition timing advance, heat value and rating of spark plugs, supply voltage, spark duration, coil interruption, spark energy, and insulation voltage to aid precise engineering and diagnostics.
Applications
ISO 7967-10:2022 vocabulary supports numerous practical applications across design, manufacturing, testing, maintenance, and regulation of ignition systems:
-
Automotive Engineering: Enables consistent terminology in development and specification of ignition components, contributing to improved engine performance, reduced emissions, and fuel efficiency.
-
Technical Documentation: Provides a standardized language for manuals, service guides, training materials, and compliance reports in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries.
-
Quality Control and Testing: Assists in defining test procedures and criteria based on universally accepted terms ensuring product reliability and safety.
-
Research and Development: Facilitates innovation in ignition technology by providing clear definitions for emerging electronic and computer-controlled ignition systems.
-
Global Trade and Standards Compliance: Helps manufacturers harmonize product descriptions and performance claims for easier acceptance in international markets.
Related Standards
-
ISO 2710-1: Vocabulary for terms related to reciprocating internal combustion engines, including engine design and operation basics.
-
ISO 6518-1:2002: Specialized vocabulary for road vehicle ignition systems covering terms such as spark energy and ignition voltage.
-
Complementary standards from IEC Electropedia and JIS B 0110 provide additional terminological resources for electrotechnical and Japanese contexts.
By adhering to ISO 7967-10:2022, industries benefit from standardized ignition system terminology that improves clarity, interoperability, and innovation in internal combustion engine technology. This standard is indispensable for engineers, technical writers, and manufacturers engaged in the development and support of ignition systems worldwide.
