This document specifies the requirements for technical procedures, quality inspection, etc. for the surface treatment of austenitic stainless steel parts (e.g. 300 series, AISI 651, A286 or equivalent). This document applies to the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants, surface cleaning, surface finishing and surface passivation before the non-destructive test of austenitic stainless steel parts.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8074:2025 - Aerospace - Surface treatment of austenitic stainless steel parts defines technical procedures, process controls and quality inspection requirements for preparing austenitic stainless steel components (for example, 300 series, AISI 651, A286) prior to non‑destructive testing. The standard covers removal of organic/inorganic contaminants, surface cleaning and finishing, pickling/etching, passivation, rinsing/drying and rework. It is intended for aerospace manufacturing environments where reliable surface condition is critical for inspection and corrosion resistance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to surface treatment before penetrant inspection and other non‑destructive tests; parts should be free of pits, scratches and mechanical damage before final passivation.
- Cleaning and degreasing: Multiple methods allowed - solvent cleaning, high‑temperature saturated steam, emulsions, and alkaline degreasing (including ultrasonic assistance). Warnings for flammable/toxic solvents and steam hazards are included.
- Scale/oxide removal and pickling: Chemical conditioning and pickling procedures are specified. Nitric/hydrofluoric acid systems are referenced; the standard advises avoiding nitric‑HF pickling for alloys in a sensitized state. Process parameters and rinsing requirements are provided.
- Etching and pre‑inspection prep: Etching prior to penetrant inspection and removal of metal contamination (minimum removal if smeared is noted) to ensure reliable NDT results.
- Passivation, rinse and dry: Final passivation is required unless a surface coating is specified. Water quality limits are specified (total dissolved solids ≤ 100 mg/kg, chloride ≤ 12 mg/kg, pH 5.5–8.0) and the concept of a water‑break‑free surface is defined.
- Process control and quality: Solution control by chemical analysis, supplier instructions for proprietary chemicals, batch acceptance tests (appearance, corrosion resistance), process control and qualification tests, and inspection/approval responsibilities are required.
- Packaging and delivery: Requirements for packaging and delivery of treated parts are included to preserve surface condition.
Practical applications and users
ISO 8074:2025 is aimed at:
- Aerospace manufacturers, subcontractors and surface‑treatment shops working with austenitic stainless steel components.
- Quality engineers and NDT technicians ensuring parts are correctly prepared for penetrant inspection and corrosion testing.
- Process engineers developing cleaning, pickling and passivation procedures compliant with aerospace quality systems.
Use this standard to ensure consistent surface condition, minimize inspection false‑calls, and maintain corrosion resistance of critical aerospace parts.
