Applies to enamelled walls of roasting devices, grills and baking devices; self-cleaning consists in the capacity first to absorb oil or fat in droplet form, and then to volatilize the greater part of the fat or oil by the sequential processes of distillation, decomposition, and combustion. Is not applicable to pyrolytically cleaning enamels.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8291:1986 - Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Method of test of self‑cleaning properties defines a laboratory test for assessing the self‑cleaning behaviour of enamelled walls used in roasting devices, grills and baking appliances. The standard describes a comparative test that measures an enamel’s ability to absorb small droplets of oil/fat and then volatilize most of that material by distillation, decomposition and combustion. It explicitly excludes pyrolytically self‑cleaning enamels.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to enamelled walls of roasting devices, grills and baking devices; not applicable to pyrolytic cleaning enamels.
- Definition: Self‑cleaning enamel is a porous vitreous finish that absorbs cooking oil droplets and enables oxidation without further temperature increase.
- Test reagent: Refined soybean oil for domestic use (unused,
