ISO 8439:1990, titled Forms Design - Basic Layout, is an international standard developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 154 in collaboration with the Universal Postal Union (UPU). It specifies fundamental principles and guidelines for the uniform layout and design of paper forms used in administration, commerce, and industry. The standard's primary aim is to facilitate easy completion, clear data entry, and efficient information retrieval from forms by standardizing overall sizes, margins, image areas, and data field arrangements.

Image Area and Division The image area is the designated space within the form where data is entered for later reproduction or processing. For A4 size, the image area measures 183 mm by 280 mm, while for A5L size, it is 183 mm by 131 mm. The image area is systematically divided both vertically into strips and horizontally into columns-typically 72 basic width spacings (bws) across, subdivided into 8 columns for ease of layout and data categorization.
