ISO 8455:2011 gives guidelines for conditions aimed to minimize the risks of infestation, contamination, and quality deterioration of green coffee (also known as raw coffee) in bags and "big-bags", in bulk and in silos, being the subject of international commerce, from the time of its packing for export until the time of its arrival in the importing country.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8455:2011 - Green coffee - Guidelines for storage and transport provides practical guidance to minimize risks of infestation, contamination and quality deterioration of green (raw) coffee from the time of packing for export until arrival in the importing country. The standard covers coffee stored in bags and “big‑bags”, in bulk and in silos, and addresses warehouse conditions, internal transport, port handling and sea transit.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and terminology
- Applies to green coffee in international trade; “big‑bag” ≈ 1 000 L.
- Moisture and quality control
- Warehouse design and environment
- Maintain stable, relatively low temperature and humidity (recommendation: ~22 °C and relative humidity ≤ 60%).
- Keep stacks at least 0.8 m from external walls and allow ventilation; upper rows should be at least 2 m below roof ridge for protection.
- Avoid building warehouses on low/wet sites; provide waterproof foundations and insulation.
- Sanitation and pest control
- Premises, equipment and incoming transport must be free of insect infestation, rodent contamination, mould and foreign odours.
- Active pest‑control programs and regular inspections by authorized agencies.
- Handling, packing and stacking
- Use clean, dry pallets or separators - bags should not contact the floor directly; protect wooden pallets from splinters.
- Avoid storing green coffee near chemicals, odorous materials or lower‑grade/contaminated coffee.
- Protect bags from rain, splashes and re‑wetting during internal transport and at ports.
- Lighting and operations
- Minimize exposure to light (store in darkness where possible); use artificial lighting sparingly and only in aisles.
- Restrict vehicle access to warehouses to prevent contamination and microclimate disruption.
- Port and sea transport
- Minimize time between packing and shipment; recommended delivery to port ≤ 72 hours.
- Use clean, dry, preferably isothermal containers/holds; stack below deck in ventilated spaces and avoid proximity to heated/cooled zones.
- Sample for moisture at loading and on arrival; inspect containers before loading.
Applications and users
ISO 8455:2011 is intended for:
- Coffee exporters, importers and traders
- Warehouse managers and logistics providers
- Shipping lines, freight forwarders and port operators
- Quality assurance, laboratory and inspection bodies
- Commodity regulators and certification programs
The standard supports contract specifications, quality assurance programs, preventive pest management and safe maritime transport practices for green coffee.
