Required apparatus:

Mechanical sieve shaker (e.g., Ro‑Tap type) producing 280–320 rotary motions/min and 140–160 taps/min; cork-fitted top cover (3–9 mm protrusion).
Nominal 200 mm diameter sieves (ISO 565): 2.00, 1.00, 0.50, 0.25 and 0.125 mm apertures (0.71 mm optional).
Bottom receiver, top-sieve cover, single-stage riffle sample splitter, balance with 0.1 g sensitivity, suitable containers.

Sampling: Follow ISO 1124 shipment sampling procedures to obtain representative material.

Procedure essentials:

Stack sieves (bottom receiver; 0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, 2.00 mm).
Split sample and take two test portions of 100 g ± 10 g.
Shake each test portion for 60–70 s.
Weigh material retained on each sieve and receiver to 0.1 g.
Accept test only if total mass loss ≤ 2%.

Expression of results: Report percentage retained on each sieve as (mass on sieve / test portion mass) × 100 and give the mean of the two test portions (rounded to whole numbers as specified).

Precision: Annex A gives repeatability and reproducibility values; due to high inter-laboratory variability the standard recommends within‑laboratory use unless reproducibility for specific materials is demonstrated.
