ISO 8528-1:2018 defines various classifications for the application, rating and performance of generating sets consisting of a Reciprocating Internal Combustion (RIC) engine, Alternating Current (a.c.) generator and any associated controlgear, switchgear and auxiliary equipment. ISO 8528-1:2018 applies to a.c. generating sets driven by RIC engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document can be the basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. sewage-gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of this document can be used as a basis for establishing these requirements. Generating sets meeting the requirements of this document are used to generate electrical power for continuous, peak-load and standby applications. The classifications laid down in this document are intended to help understanding between manufacturer and customer.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8528-1:2018 defines application, rating and performance classifications for alternating-current (a.c.) generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines. The standard applies to land and marine generating sets (excluding aircraft and propulsion for land vehicles/locomotives) and establishes a common framework for specifying power ratings, modes of operation, installation conditions and performance expectations. It is intended to improve understanding between manufacturers and customers and to form the basis for any supplementary requirements for critical uses (e.g., hospitals, high-rise buildings).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Power rating categories: clear definitions for Continuous Power (COP), Prime Power (PRP), Limited-Time Running Power (LTP), Emergency Standby Power (ESP), Data Centre Power (DCP) and MAX for low‑power sets.
- Modes of operation: continuous constant/varying load, limited-time operation, peak-load and standby use.
- Performance classes: standardized classes to express expected generator behaviour and capabilities.
- Site and installation conditions: ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, air quality, marine environment, vibration and cooling liquid considerations that affect rated power.
- Start-up and control: specified start-up times, manual/semi-automatic/automatic operation modes, and parallel operation (set-to-set and with utility).
- Operating performance requirements: load acceptance, cyclic operation, frequency and voltage regulation, generator temperature rise, fuel and lubricating oil characteristics and minimum running hours.
- Mechanical/electrical configuration: mounting types, coupling/assembly arrangements, controlgear, switchgear and auxiliaries.
- Emissions and supplementary provisions: identifies where additional requirements may be necessary for sensitive applications.
Applications
ISO 8528-1:2018 is used to specify and select generator sets for:
- Backup and emergency power (hospitals, data centres, critical infrastructure)
- Continuous and prime power supply (remote sites, off-grid installations)
- Peak shaving and demand-management applications
- Marine power generation (ships and offshore platforms)
- Transportable and mobile power units (construction, events)
By defining consistent ratings and performance expectations, the standard helps ensure correct sizing, procurement and contractual clarity.
Who uses this standard
- Generator manufacturers and OEMs
- Power system designers and electrical engineers
- Specifiers, purchasers and facility managers (hospitals, data centres, industries)
- Shipbuilders and marine engineers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
Related standards
- Other parts of the ISO 8528 series (for tests, measurement methods and accessory requirements).
- Electrotechnical standards from IEC and national bodies that address generator testing, electrical safety and grid interconnection.
