This document specifies the criteria for controlgear and switchgear for generating sets with reciprocating internal combustion engines. This document applies to alternating current (a.c.) generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines for land and marine use excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies and high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document serve as a basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For generating sets driven by other prime movers (e.g. steam engines), this document serves as a basis for establishing requirements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8528-4:2025 specifies criteria for controlgear and switchgear used on alternating‑current (a.c.) generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines. It applies to land and marine gensets (excluding aircraft, traction for land vehicles and locomotives) and provides a technical basis for supplementary requirements for critical installations (e.g., hospitals, high‑rise buildings). The standard replaces the 2005 edition and aligns control, protection and switchgear design with modern genset applications.
Key topics and requirements
- General equipment requirements: mounting, construction, operating voltage, rated frequency/current, control‑circuit voltage, starter battery systems, environmental conditions and enclosure/degree of protection.
- Generating set switchgear: design guidance for load‑switching devices, fault‑current ratings, cables and interconnections, and generator protection.
- Control modes: defined operating modes such as hand start/stop, local electric start, remote start, automatic start/stop, standby‑to‑mains control, dual/triple mutual standby, combined with utility generation mode, non‑interrupting load transfer and full parallel operation.
- Monitoring and protection: requirements for electrical instrumentation, over‑current and earth‑fault protection, motor starting, underspeed and reverse‑power protection, load protection/load shedding, control‑circuit protection, and engine protection/instrumentation.
- Communication and parallel operation: recommended communication content and interfaces for safe and coordinated multi‑genset parallel control and supervisory functions.
- Regulatory and application notes: use with marine classification society rules, and as a basis for gensets driven by other prime movers (e.g., steam engines).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 8528-4:2025 is intended for:
- Genset manufacturers (OEMs) specifying controlgear and switchgear design
- Switchgear and control system integrators implementing protection and parallel control
- Electrical specifiers and consulting engineers developing power system requirements
- Facility and critical‑power managers (hospitals, data centers, high‑rise buildings) selecting reliable control modes and non‑interrupting transfer solutions
- Marine engineers and shipyards applying classification society requirements
- Testing, commissioning and maintenance teams ensuring compliance and safe operation
Practical benefits include safer generator integration, standardized protection strategies, clearer requirements for uninterrupted transfer and parallel operation, and a baseline for supplementary or application‑specific requirements.
