Extends the service definition of the externally visible file transfer, access and management service given in ISO 8571 part 3 in an abstract way to incorporate the services offered by overlapped access. The objective in introducing overlapped access is to allow more efficient access to structured files when a single initiator has a need to perform many reading and updating operations.

ISO 8571-3:1988/Amd.2:1993 is an amendment to the OSI File Transfer, Access and Management (FTAM) File Service Definition that extends the externally visible file service to support overlapped access. Its objective is to improve efficiency when a single initiator performs many read and update operations on structured files by allowing multiple bulk data transfers to be overlapped rather than strictly serialized.
