ISO 8653:2016 specifies a method to measure the ring-size using a ring stick with defined characteristics, which is mainly used during manufacturing steps, and specifies the designation of the ring-size. NOTE For jeweller-consumer relationships, the finger size is measured with a finger gauge set made up of a ring for each size with the same diameter and tolerance than the ring stick ones.

Apparatus (ring stick)

Measurement scale length: 160.0 mm ± 0.5 mm.
Material: metal or material with equivalent wear resistance.
Minimum and maximum ring-sizes: 41 to 76.
Specified diameters and tolerances for sample sizes (from Table 1):
- Size 41 → 13.05 mm ± 0.02 mm
- Size 51 → 16.23 mm ± 0.02 mm
- Size 61 → 19.42 mm ± 0.02 mm
- Size 71 → 22.60 mm ± 0.02 mm
- Size 76 → 24.19 mm ± 0.02 mm
Ring sticks shall be regularly checked, for example with a finger gauge set matching the same diameters and tolerances.

Measurement method

Slide the ring down the ring stick without external force; the contact point on the stick determines the measured circumference.
Two inside profiles:
- Rounded inside profile - measurement point at middle of ring thickness.
- Flat inside profile - measurement point at the bottom of ring thickness.

Particular ring shapes

Rules for signet rings/mountings (place flat part on stick), interlaced circles (read under bottom), and square rings (inscribe a circle so flats are not aligned with stick flats).

Designation

Designate as: **Ring-size ISO 8653 - ** (example: Ring-size ISO 8653 - 43). If size is marked on the ring, only the circumference may be shown (e.g., “43”).
