ISO 8854:2012 specifies test methods and general requirements for the determination of the electrical characteristic data of alternators for road vehicles. It applies to alternators, cooled according to the supplier's instructions, mounted on internal combustion engines.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 8854:2012 (Alternators with regulators)
ISO 8854:2012 specifies test methods and general requirements for determining the electrical characteristic data of alternators with regulators used in road vehicles. It applies to alternators mounted on internal combustion engines and cooled according to the supplier’s instructions. The standard defines measurement conditions, required test equipment, measurement procedures (warm/cold tests), and presentation of results to assess alternator performance reliably.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test conditions
- Ambient temperature: T = (23 ± 5) °C (higher temperatures optional).
- Standard atmospheric pressure; deviations must be recorded.
- Sense of rotation per supplier specification.
- Drive control tolerance: alternator frequency setpoints ±5 min⁻¹.
- Load current control tolerance: set current ±1.0 A.
- Measuring accuracy
- Voltage ±0.1% | Current ±0.2% | Torque ±0.5% of rated sensor | Rotational frequency ±2 min⁻¹ | Ambient temperature ±1 K | Air pressure ±5 hPa.
- Test equipment & setup
- Controlled ambient airflow in alternator area (max 1 m/s); preferred flow bottom→top.
- Terminal connection per standard test schematic (battery/storage device, load resistor, ignition on).
- Optional filter capacitor: polarized electrolytic, 68 000 µF, short copper leads.
- Measurements (voltage, current, speed, torque) recorded simultaneously (≤1 s between first and last).
- Measurement procedures
- Current vs. rotational frequency characteristic at full load (regulator duty 100%).
- Key characteristic points: cut-in speed, zero-amp speed (by extrapolation), minimum application current (idling speed), rated current at n = 6 000 min⁻¹.
- Short-form warm/cold tests, partial-load tests (regulator active), regulator functional checks, load dump measurements (see ISO 7637-2), voltage ripple, and efficiency/weighted efficiency determination.
- Results
- Presentation of measured values and derived parameters (efficiency η, weighted efficiency ηW) with required holding times and steady-state conditions.
Applications and users
- Automotive alternator manufacturers and suppliers - product development, verification and specification of rated current, efficiency and robustness.
- Vehicle OEM electrical systems engineers - system integration, regulator tuning, and compatibility testing.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - standardized test methods for certification and comparison.
- Aftermarket and component validation teams - load dump, voltage ripple and regulator performance checks.
