The method does not apply completely to alloys with a silicon content higher than 10 % and a manganese content less than 0,1 % (see annex) and aluminium alloys containing tin, antimony, bismuth, zirconium, etc. Specifies principle and procedure of the method, reagents, apparatus, sampling, expression of results and test report.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 886:1973 specifies a photometric method for the determination of manganese (Mn) in aluminium and aluminium alloys with manganese content between 0.005 % and 1.5 % (mass). The standard defines the analytical principle, required reagents and apparatus, sampling approach, calibration and measurement procedures, expression of results and contents of the test report. It supersedes the earlier Recommendation ISO/R 886-1968.

- Principle: Attack the sample with sodium hydroxide, acidify with sulfuric and nitric acids, oxidize Mn(II) to Mn(VII) with potassium periodate in an acidic phosphoric medium, and measure the developed colour photometrically near 525 nm.
