Principles

Kjeldahl: oxidative digestion in concentrated H2SO4 with catalyst → ammonium converted and distilled → back-titration of excess HCl with NaOH.
Perchloric acid: one tertiary amine equivalent titrated with perchloric acid in acetone; requires standardization against dry hexa.
Hydrochloric acid: potentiometric titration of dissolved resin using HCl (0.10 M in butanol/ethylene glycol or 0.20 M in acetone/water).

Specifies analytical-grade chemicals, concentrations (e.g., HCl titrant strengths), and apparatus (Kjeldahl flasks, automatic burettes, pH/electrodes, automatic titrators).

Safety & limitations

Kjeldahl digestion must be carried out in a fume cupboard.
Perchloric acid: hazardous with organic matter; explosion risk if in excess-use caution or prefer HCl method when oxidizable additives exist.

Quality & reporting

Duplicate determinations required; repeat if results differ by >5%.
Kjeldahl reproducibility: ±0.30% (m/m) hexa.
Test report must reference the method used, resin identification, individual results and mean, and test date.
