This part of ISO 9073 describes methods for the evaluation of some aspects of the behaviour of nonwoven fabrics in the presence of liquids. In particular: _ the liquid absorbency time; _ the liquid absorptive capacity; _ the liquid wicking rate (capillarity). It should be noted that these different aspects of absorbency may relate to various end uses of the tested products. The tests are not applicable to any fabric containing super absorbent materials.

Test pieces (e.g., 30 × 250 mm) are clamped vertically and rise is recorded at specified times (10 s, 30 s, 60 s, optionally 300 s).
Results reported for machine and cross directions with averaged values and standard deviations; wicking curves can be plotted to evaluate rate behavior.

Test reporting and conditioning

Tests reference ISO 139 for conditioning and ISO 186 for sampling.
Reports must identify sample details, test liquid, deviations from procedure and statistical summaries.
