This document specifies test methods for the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds for domestic and non-domestic use. The tests apply to beds with an internal length greater than 1 400 mm and a maximum bed base width of 1 200 mm, and with the upper surface of a bed base 600 mm or more above the floor. The tests are designed to be applied to a bed that is fully assembled and ready for use. The applicable safety requirements are given in ISO 9098‑1:2023.

Finger probes with hemispherical ends (e.g., Ø7 mm and Ø12 mm) and shape assessment probes for gap/entrapment checks.
Bed base impactor: 200 mm circular body with defined mass and spring system (total apparatus mass and spring rate specified), and a convex striking surface geometry.
Loading pads (200 mm curved and 100 mm flat options) for application of contact loads.
Test mattress: foam sheet (100 mm thick) meeting ISO 2439 hardness/density requirements; minimum mattress dimensions specified.

Test procedures

Inspection and measurement of holes, gaps and V/irregular shaped openings.
Strength and durability tests for bed bases, safety barriers, frames, fastenings, access means (ladders/steps) and platform barriers.
Stability and fastening tests for upper bed attachment to lower bed.
