ISO 9168:2009 is applicable for achieving reliable interchangeability between hoses from dental units and dental handpieces. ISO 9168:2009 specifies four types of hose connector for use between air driven dental handpieces and the flexible hoses of the dental unit which supply the handpieces with water, air and light, and provide for exhaust.

- Type 2: 4–5 outlets, thread 0.555–36 UNS (includes fibre optic/light option)

Fluid/electrical functions: Interfaces supply water, drive air, spray air, exhaust and optionally light/electrical connections.
Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional drawings (Figures 1–4) and thread characteristics (Table 1). Measurement accuracy for tests: ±0.01 mm for linear dimensions, ±1° for angles.
Resistance to reprocessing: Connectors must withstand minimum 250 reprocessing cycles per the manufacturer’s instructions without deterioration or corrosion. Quick connectors not permanently fixed to instruments must also meet ISO 7494-1 requirements.
Testing & sampling: One representative sample per connector type; dimensional and reprocessing tests described in clause 7.
Design guidance: Annex A recommends ergonomic, cleanable surfaces, secure grip areas, reduced glare and serviceable construction for maintenance/repair.
