This document gives guidance for measuring a quantity of primarily viscous hydrocarbon liquid using flowmeters at ambient or elevated operating temperatures. This document describes the effects of high viscosities and potentially high temperatures, which can induce additional errors in measurement. It also gives guidance on how to overcome or mitigate difficulties.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9200:2024 - Petroleum measurement systems: Metering of viscous and high temperature liquids provides guidance for measuring quantities of primarily viscous hydrocarbon liquids using flowmeters at ambient or elevated operating temperatures. The second edition updates the earlier 1993 edition to include both mass and volumetric metering, a clear definition of viscosity, and expanded coverage of meter types (including ultrasonic and Coriolis). It is intended to guide the design, installation, operation and proving of flowmeters and auxiliary equipment when high viscosity or elevated temperature conditions affect measurement accuracy.
Key Topics
- Properties of viscous liquids: definitions of dynamic and kinematic viscosity, density, Reynolds number and their impact on flow profiles. (Reynolds numbers < 2 000 generally indicate laminar flow; > 5 000 indicate turbulent flow.)
- Effects of temperature: how heating is used to reduce viscosity, thermal expansion, and temperature-dependent errors in different meter types.
- Flowmeter types and limitations: practical considerations for differential pressure, positive displacement, turbine, Coriolis mass, and ultrasonic meters when used with viscous or hot liquids.
- Metering system design: installation practices, heating systems, start-up and filling procedures to avoid solidification and to manage air, gas, solids or wax precipitation.
- Meter proving and calibration: pipe provers (displacement provers), volumetric measures, gravimetric proving and master meter proving methods tailored for viscous liquids.
- Volumetric corrections: standard volume concepts, thermal expansion correction, and how temperature affects meter response (including comments specific to Coriolis, ultrasonic and other meters).
- Assumptions and limits: document assumes Newtonian hydrocarbon liquids; non-Newtonian fluids require additional considerations.
Applications
- Custody transfer and custody metering of viscous hydrocarbon products (e.g., heavy fuel oils, bitumen feedstocks).
- Design and operation of heated pipelines, transfer stations, tank farms and loading systems where viscosity, temperature and meter selection impact accuracy.
- Meter selection, installation and performance testing for refineries, petrochemical plants and bulk liquid transporters.
Who should use this standard
- Metering engineers and instrumentation specialists
- Pipeline and terminal operators
- Flowmeter manufacturers and calibration laboratories
- Quality assurance and regulatory compliance teams involved in petroleum measurement systems
