ISO 9236-1:2004 specifies methods for the determination of the sensitometric curve shape, average gradient and speed of a single sample of a screen/film/filmholder/processing system for medical radiography. It is not applicable to special radiographic applications such as mammography, dental radiography and direct-exposing medical radiographic systems (see for example ISO 5799). The filmholder can be any means that ensures close screen/film contact and prevents the film from being exposed to ambient light. In particular, the filmholder can be a light-tight vacuum bag, as often used in the laboratory, or a radiographic cassette as used in medical radiography.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9236-1:2004 - Photography - Sensitometry of screen/film systems for medical radiography - Part 1 - defines standardized methods to determine the sensitometric curve shape, speed, and average gradient of a single screen/film/filmholder/processing system used in medical radiography. The standard excludes special modalities such as mammography, dental radiography and direct-exposing systems. It covers laboratory and clinical-like test conditions, measurement uncertainties, and reporting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Sensitometric curve shape: Measured under low-scatter conditions using intensity-scale X‑ray sensitometry (preferably an inverse‑square sensitometer). The curve (density vs log exposure) is the basis for other metrics.
- Average gradient: Defined as the slope joining two specified points on the sensitometric curve - a measure of effective contrast.
- Speed: Quantitative response of the screen/film system for specified exposure, processing and measurement conditions. Speed is measured under simulated clinical exposures (with phantoms) and requires absolute air‑kerma measurement in gray (Gy).
- Beam and equipment: Use high‑frequency (multipulse) or at least 12‑pulse high‑voltage generators; tungsten or tungsten‑based targets; permanent filtration equivalent to 2.5 mm ± 0.2 mm Al.
- Dosimetry: Calibrated detectors required. Air‑kerma uncertainty:
