Abstract
Overview
ISO 9669:1990 specifies interface connections for Series 1 freight tank containers in accordance with ISO 1496-3. The standard was developed to reduce the operational problems caused by multiple, incompatible interface fittings and to ensure that tank containers equipped with flange-type connections are compatible with national flange arrangements used where the containers are operated. By harmonizing interface connections, ISO 9669 supports safer, more efficient international transport and handling of liquids, gases and pressure-bulk solids.
Key principles covered by the standard include: the identification of interface zones, definitions for tank types and fluids, test and welding requirements for interfaces, and prescribed ranges of flange connections for specified container type codes.
Key Topics
- Definitions and scope: Terms such as "container-tank", "gas", "liquid" and "pressure of service" are defined to establish consistent interpretation across jurisdictions.
- Design and testing: All interfaces are treated as integral parts of the tank and must undergo the same hydraulic (pressure) tests required for the tank itself. Welding and weld preparation for welded interfaces shall follow a recognized code, consistent with the tank design.
- Flange connections: Section 2 prescribes a set of flange-type interface connections for Series 1 tank containers of type codes 70–77 and 85–88 (per ISO 1496-3). Dimensions are referenced to figures and tables in the standard to ensure interchangeability with external loading/unloading equipment.
- Manholes and closures: The standard includes provisions for the dimensions and characteristics of manholes and manhole covers applicable to tanks intended for liquids or pressure-bulk solids, and addresses plugs/openings used to access the tank contents.
- Mechanical fastenings: Section 4 sets out requirements related to bolt threads and fastening arrangements used at interface connections.
- Material and flange thickness guidance: Examples are given to relate minimum flange thickness to material tensile properties, helping designers select appropriate flange dimensions for carbon and stainless steels.
Applications
ISO 9669:1990 is primarily useful for:
- Manufacturers of Series 1 tank containers specifying interface flanges and closures.
- Operators and logistics providers aiming to ensure interchangeability and reduce coupling complexity during loading/unloading.
- Regulatory and inspection authorities verifying that tank interfaces meet hydraulic test and welding requirements.
- Designers integrating tank fittings with national or regional flange standards to maintain safe transfer operations.
Practical benefits:
- Reduced diversity of fittings and adapters in ports and terminals
- Improved operational safety and emergency response clarity
- Easier international deployment of tank containers

- National and regional flange standards (as referenced by ISO 9669) for compatibility in specific operating countries
For manufacturers and operators, ISO 9669:1990 provides the normative framework to standardize tank-container flange interfaces, align testing and welding practices, and support interoperable, safe transfer systems for a wide range of bulk and pressurized cargoes.
