This document specifies requirements and test methods to assess the thermomechanical compatibility between a veneering ceramic and a metallic or ceramic substructure material used for dental restorations. This document applies only to the materials used in combination. Conformity cannot be claimed for a single material. For requirements for ceramic materials, see ISO 6872. For requirements for metallic materials see ISO 22674.

Overview
ISO 9693:2019 specifies test methods and requirements for assessing the thermomechanical compatibility between a veneering ceramic and a metallic or ceramic substructure used in dental restorations. The standard covers combined-material testing (not single-material certification) to evaluate risks from mastication and oral thermal cycling, and it replaces earlier parts ISO 9693‑1:2012 and ISO 9693‑2:2016.

- Thermal shock (thermocycling): At least one thermocycling protocol (two alternatives in Clauses 6.5.3/6.5.4) must be performed to assess resistance to thermal shock.
- Sampling and traceability: Test samples and veneering ceramics must come from the same lot; use the most commonly used shade for testing.
- Reporting: Test results and specimen details must be reported per Clause 7.
